As I discuss nstions seem straightforward—just find what the passage says, right? Yet students routinely miss them, not because they can't read carefully, but because they lack a clear standard for evaluating the answer choices.
Like all Core Reading questions, Details questions reward one thing: accuracy. The correct answer tells "the truth and nothing but the truth" about specific elements in the passage. Wrong answers distort, exaggerate, or fabricate—sometimes subtly enough that they feel right if you're not systematically verifying each one.
As I discuss in my book, success on Details questions requires applying the Cross-Examiner's Toolbox™ Tests—the Highlighter Test™, the Clip Art Test™, the Negative Filter Test™, and the Saturation Slider Test™—to verify which answer choice accurately restates what the passage says.
One complication: the correct answer isn't always a straight summary. Sometimes it's a valid inference—a logical conclusion the passage implies but doesn't state outright. When this happens, the strategies for Inference questions apply. But since you won't know in advance whether you're dealing with summary or inference, you always begin with the Toolbox Tests.
The answer explanations below walk through some of the most challenging Details questions from the official College Board question bank, demonstrating how to apply systematic verification to real test questions.
